Hi Tim, liked the picture of the Commodore, I used one of those at teacher's training college, but my first computer which I programmed in Binary Coded Decimal only had 400 memory spaces. (NCR 500) I wrote all sorts too, Sales ledger, cheque production, payroll, and stock control for a subsiduary of Rootes (Chrysler?) I don't program now but I did use Xara (a freebie on a magazine CD) to make the buttons for my website, its a good little program.
Sadly I think programming is a thing of my past but I completely agree with your sentiments about good programs being written with only small amounts of code. Mine had to be...( I did briefly teach programming in BASIC and the lads hated it when I insisted on flowcharts before they started coding.)

That's a good question - Memento currently has no printing or export support, although the file format is simple, so if you happened to be a programmer you could probably do something like this yourself.

However, you're probably not a programmer, so that's not much help :-).

I'm currently adding some new features to Memento, so I might add printing support (or let you export notes as a simple text file, which you could then print out from Notepad/Word etc).

I recommend that you make sure Memento's automatic update check is enabled (see the 'Options' window) and then you'll know if/when I do this because Memento will tell you about the new version.

The notes are stored in a fairly simple plain text format in the 'Memento.notes' file in your 'My Documents' folder. You can copy and paste note contents from this file into whatever program you're using on the Mac to store notes.

There is no automated conversion process (and no version of Memento for Mac OS X).

Hi Tim -- Thanks for the reply.

I moved the "My Documents" folder by right-clicking on its Desktop shortcut, then specifying a new target folder location in the appropriate field. I then rebooted my PC, ran Memento soon after that, and that's when I noticed the problem.

It may be, like you said, that I had started Memento some time before moving the My Documents folder; I didn't think it was running at the time, but I'm not 100% sure.

This underscores the importance of backing up anything important you might want to save in a Memento note (or any document for that matter!).

I'm not really sure what happened there. That sort of thing can happen if you move 'My Documents' while Memento is running.

But if Memento was not running, and your folder had been completely moved before you ran Memento again, I'm not sure why the notes were lost. When Memento starts it justs asks Windows where 'My Documents' is, and looks for the Memento notes file in there. If there is no such file, it makes a new (empty) one.

THe only thing I can think of is that you started Memento before your documents folder had been completely moved.

Out of interest, how did you move your My Documents folder?

Standalone mode is invoked when Memento finds the 'Memento.notes' file in the same place as Memento.exe. Otherwise it will look in your 'My Documents' folder for the notes file.

So:

1. Quit Memento
2.
Well, this does sometimes happen (seems to be an interaction with Windows Update and its prediliction for forced restarts).

However, I'm going to do you a big favour now, based on what you've said.

You're using a computer. It contains a hard drive. Presumably you have data on that hard drive that is valuable to you. Here's the secret no-one wants to tell you.

Hard drives can fail. Just like that. You could turn on your computer tomorrow, and the hard drive could fail to start. You might lose *all* of the data on that hard-drive. Unless you have backed it up somewhere (another PC, another hard drive, etc), then you will have lost all that data (pictures, emails, music) forever.

So try to back up your stuff.

Sorry if I sound patronising, but many people seem unaware that they are storing their precious data on a device that is so fragile, and they're usually grateful when I point it out.

If you have data you value, and you only have a single copy of it on a single hard drive, then you *will* lose that data one day. I speak from experience.

Thanks, this is great!
I've been using Memento for a while now and love it.
I recently lost a bunch of notes due to failed saving (but had an old standalone copy which I hand edited in with notepad) so I now make frequent use of the paranoid's Save Now feature.
I assume development is stalled, if not over, but wonder how possible it is to have the option to have show on task bar default to true. I keep my notes closed for the most part and find I am always alt-tabbing in and out while they are open. Most of my notes are for short term storage so I usually end up putting the text somewhere else or I gather bits from here and there which involves many repeat entries.
Sorting which has been requested so many times would be useful, but I managed to maintain the correct syntax in Notepad so am comfortable sorting manually as required. I would prefer the option to make the text larger, sometimes it's a bit small. Would zoom be easier or harder than allowing proper resizing?

Not sure if you're still interested in working on FastFind, but if you are, there's an idea for you...

thanks for a useful, small, sensible program!

-- Gary Oberbrunner

Gosh - I managed to miss this message - sorry!

Anyway, FreeSpace only checks the free space every five minutes, so if you, for example, delete a lot of files, it won't show up immediately in the FreeSpace display. This is deliberate - it's supposed to be a very low profile utility that isn't polling the system all the time. I guess I could add an option for how often it updates the free space display.

Don't hold your breath, though.

Kind of sad it wouldnt work on Vista.

Which kind of functions would make it not work under vista ? Maybe it is just working, anyone tried it ?

I am having actually another problem. I have one 4/3 display my ole good TV) and another 4/3 display (an LCD panel) which is used in a DIY Projector. I am only using part of the lcd screen and running it in 16/9 on my 4/3 lcd panel ( with the /widescreen toggle).

Would it be possible to have such a feature in mceswitch (force an aspect ratio switch on a given display ?).

"Would it be feasible to enhance the window search algorithm of SwitchMCE to look for and handle PowerDVD windows when the MCE window is not present or is minimized?"

I guess so. That would mean SwitchMCE would need to monitor the window list - at the moment it only does something when you press a button.

"Lacking that, might source be available?"

I don't have any HD DVDs, so if you want it, you'll probably have to do it yourself.
I have used SwitchMCE for many months now and it has performed its critical function flawlessly. Thank you.

I came back to your site, however, for the more common reason of got-something-for-free-want-more.

As I am sure you are aware, MCE does not address either HD-DVD or BluRay playback. MyMovies facilitates playback of these by minimizing MCE and launching PowerDVD. Alas, PowerDVD launches on the wrong (most of the time) screen.

Would it be feasible to enhance the window search algorithm of SwitchMCE to look for and handle PowerDVD windows when the MCE window is not present or is minimized?

I have a slightly worn kazoo and funny hat that might be used to celebrate the occasion. if so.

Lacking that, might source be available?

Thanks again for the useful tool.

John Brisbin
zohn@nakasuzi.com (change the z'z to j'z if you're not a spammer)
